Ironman Hamburg 2018

  • Hardest triathlon in the world, round 2!

Fantastic sportsmen, a great atmosphere in the audience, emotional moments at the finish line and even the weather showed its best side: After the acclaimed premiere in August 2017, it was quickly decided that Hamburg would once again become the venue of an "Ironman"! On July 29, 2018, Hamburg is ready: once again we have to overcome our own limits, master all three disciplines and at the end of the day we have to walk through the goal to hear the redeeming words: "You are an Ironman!"

The fourth major endurance sports event, next to the Hamburg Marathon, ITU World Triathlon and the Cyclassics in the Hanseatic city, is not only an extraordinary challenge for the athletes, but also a very special competition for the spectators. A total of 2,500 athletes are expected, the registration phase began on August 21, 2017 and registration is possible at www.ironman.com

    The Ironman track in Hamburg

The number of kilometres to be covered is enormous: 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling and a marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres of running - that is the task for the athletes.

Most of the route through the Hanseatic city is already in place: Swimming will take place on an M-shaped route through the inland and outlying Alster. Once you have passed this first hurdle, you will cycle through HafenCity and the southern metropolitan region. The route will not only take you along flat cycle paths: the route will run four times over the Köhlbrandbrücke, among other things. The final marathon will consist of four rounds along the inland and outlying Alster, the finish will be at Rathausmarkt.

The winner of the competition not only receives a decent prize money, but also points in the qualification standings for the World Cup. This will take place in Hawaii, where the Ironman originally comes from.

    Training for the Ironman

If you want to take part in the Ironman in Hamburg next year, you should start training immediately. Half a year of preparation time for the long-distance triathlon is mandatory, a distinct experience in endurance sports and especially in triathlon is an advantage. Each week there are about 12 to 14 hours of training to do. If you don't have any experience in triathlon, you should first try a "normal" triathlon. The Ironman is the most preparation-intensive version of this sport.

The event is also worth a visit for spectators. One should experience the Ironman live: In addition to the opportunity to cheer on extreme athletes at the limit, the Ironman Hamburg will also offer an comprehensive supporting programme.
